Slavery and Freedom in Black and White: The African American Experience in 19th Century Newspapers July 8, 2011
This is not an official release from the National Archives at Morrow, but rather a personal invitation from Rose.
Those of you who attended Homeschool History Day at the Archives in Morrow may have met a wonderful woman, Christine Mitchell. She has a collection of historical newspapers, some from the late 1700's I believe, and has developed, along with Joel, an interesting exhibit that will be displayed at the Archives until October, if plans go forward.
Speakers from Clayton State University: Dr. Adam Tate,The Atlanta Voice: Janis Ware, National Archives: Joel Walker, and of course, Christine Mitchell. The Clayton State Gospel Choir will begin and end the program It begins at 7:00 and should end by 8:00.

Home School Day will be held May 13th 2011 from 10am to 5pm. Tickets are $25 with a meal and return ticket, or $18 for admission alone. Parking is $5. To purchase tickets for this exclusive event home school groups must provide documentation that they are homeschoolers, by submitting a copy of their Home School registration certificate, or a copy of a receipt from purchasing textbooks. Groups can also purchase tickets by contacting their Home School Association, to receive an order form or promotion codes to purchase online.

Spring Classes at Gwinnett History Museum
The Gwinnett History Museum's spring homeschool classes will start next Tuesday, January 11, with our class for ages 6-10 entitled 19th Century lessons. That class will start by discussing life and events in 1855 (the year our building opened as a school) and then will role-play lessons in a one-room schoolhouse. This month's class for ages 11-up is scheduled for Tuesday, January 25. It is called "What is History?" and will include information on primary documents and historical research, including guidelines for writing a research paper. Classes are scheduled from 10:00am to noon and cost $5 each for Gwinnett County residents; however, students enrolling for four classes at once (January-April) get a discounted rate of $12 for all four, and will be eligible for a discount when registration opens for our May class also. The rest of our spring topics are as follows:
Ages 6-10
2/1 – Who was Abraham Lincoln;
3/1 – Sugar and Spice, But Not Always Nice;
4/12 – Plant It, Watch it Grow.
Ages 11-up
2/15 – The Great Emancipator, Abraham Lincoln;
3/15 – Women's History, Not for Girls Only;
4/26 – Gwinnett Through the Years
Classes include age-appropriate instruction, crafts, and games.
Please note that we have a new policy for ages 6-10; if a parent is unable to remain in class with their child, they will need to review and sign our behavioral contract. Parents are welcome to attend the class for ages 11-up, but are not required to do so.

PSAT SPOTS AVAILABLE IN CUMMING
If you have had trouble finding a place for your teen to take the PSAT, here is your opportunity. 11th graders should take this exam to find out if they are eligible for the National Merit Scholarship.

NIPA has made the decision to order 25 more tests to accommodate more
students who wish to take the PSAT.
If you know of anyone in the home educating community who needs to take this
test, please forward them this information.
If you wish to test I will need the following information:
1. Your child's name
2. Your address

4. An email address that is checked frequently
5. A check made out to NIPA in the amount of $30.

Lynne has a B.S. in Secondary Science Education from the University of South Carolina with specific emphasis in biology, chemistry, anatomy, and physiology. She taught science classes in public middle and high school and has taught homeschool science classes in North Carolina. For the last eight years she has taught chemistry, biology labs, and anatomy and physiology labs to homeschoolers in Georgia. She is a home schooling mom of 2 high school graduates, one currently in the physical therapy doctoral program at Emory University and the other a senior studying computer science at Berry College.

Homeschool Days at the Atlanta History Center -- Homeschool Open House
We are pleased to announce our annual HomeschoolOpen House at the Atlanta History Center on August 16, 2010 from 10:00 AM – 5:30 PM. We invite homeschooling families to explore the Atlanta History Center free of charge, including our exhibitions, historic houses, and gardens! We’ll have information about our educational programs including all our upcomingHomeschool Days, School Tours, Poetry Out Loud, Youth Writing Workshops, Outreach Programs, Family Programs, and more! Pick up some free teaching materials and take advantage of a special discounted Family Membership rate of $65 for the whole year!

I trust you are having a great Summer. If you are tired of this current heat wave … remind yourself that sometime in late September or early October a sheet of ice 200” long and 85’ wide will be put down at the Arena. Hopefully, that thought will help cool you off. We open the 2010-2011 home Schedule on Friday, October 22nd at 7:35 vs. South Carolina.
I looked at the calendar this morning and realized that my kids will be back in School (1) month from tomorrow … it’s once again time to start planning “Hat Trick for Reading.”
If you are getting this, it’s because you were my 2009 Home School contact for our “Hat Trick for Reading” program. I hope you’ll be able to sign your Students up again for 2010.
Attached are the 2010 Program Outline and Home School Agreement form. As soon as you know about your Group’s participation, kindly return the Agreement info to me and I’ll make sure the program materials will be sent to you in a timely manner. LOCAL HOME SCHOOL GROUPS
I trust you are having a great Summer. If you are tired of this current heat wave … remind yourself that sometime in late September or early October a sheet of ice 200” long and 85’ wide will be put down at the Arena. Hopefully, that thought will help cool you off. We open the 2010-2011 home Schedule on Friday, October 22nd at 7:35 vs. South Carolina.
I looked at the calendar this morning and realized that my kids will be back in School (1) month from tomorrow … it’s once again time to start planning “Hat Trick for Reading.”
If you are getting this, it’s because you were my 2009 Home School contact for our “Hat Trick for Reading” program. I hope you’ll be able to sign your Students up again for 2010.
Attached are the 2010 Program Outline and Home School Agreement form. As soon as you know about your Group’s participation, kindly return the Agreement info to me and I’ll make sure the program materials will be sent to you in a timely manner. The award night your kids will be reading for is Saturday, November 6th – a 7:05 pm face-off vs. Greenville. (email e-mail at jhall@gwinnettgladiators.com for attachment)
