It;s not too late to join Summer reading program 2010 at Gwinnett County Public Libraries:

What is the Summer Reading Program?

It's a fun and free way to encourage kids to read.  Reading during school vacations helps maintain and even improve reading skills, and it's fun!  From May 15 through August 22, 2010, readers of all ages can set a goal, keep track of their reading activities, and collect great prizes.  Look for special incentives and programs to keep the excitement going all summer long! 

Who can join?

All ages are welcome to participate.  A separate program for teens

(rising 6th graders and up) is also available.

How do I sign up?

It's easy!  Register online here.  Anytime after May 15, you may also register on-site at any of the fifteen Gwinnett County Public Library branches.  Whether you register online or in person, stop by any branch after May 15 to pick up a registration packet with a reading record, sticker, bookmark,

and coupons for free treats from local sponsors.

I trust you are having a great Summer. If you are tired of this current heat wave … remind yourself that sometime in late September or early October a sheet of ice 200” long and 85’ wide will be put down at the Arena. Hopefully, that thought will help cool you off. We open the 2010-2011 home Schedule on Friday, October 22nd at 7:35 vs. South Carolina.

I looked at the calendar this morning and realized that my kids will be back in School (1) month from tomorrow … it’s once again time to start planning “Hat Trick for Reading.”

If you are getting this, it’s because you were my 2009 Home School contact for our “Hat Trick for Reading” program. I hope you’ll be able to sign your Students up again for 2010.

Attached are the 2010 Program Outline and Home School Agreement form. As soon as you know about your Group’s participation, kindly return the Agreement info to me and I’ll make sure the program materials will be sent to you in a timely manner. The award night your kids will be reading for is Saturday, November 6th – a 7:05 pm face-off vs. Greenville. (email e-mail at jhall@gwinnettgladiators.com for attachment)

HOME SCHOOL GROUPS

“Hat Trick for Reading” Program - 2009

The Gwinnett Gladiators “Hat Trick for Reading” Program is designed to help stimulate interest in reading among Elementary School aged children (grades K-5) in Fulton, Forsyth, and Hall Counties, as well as surrounding areas. This program will be open to Public School, Private School, and Home School Groups.

Each participating student will be given a Gladiators bookmark and asked to read at least three books during a specified time period (usually three to four weeks.) It will be up to the Media Specialist, Teacher, or School Administration to determine appropriate reading materials. After students complete their reading, they will be required to submit to the teacher “proof” they read their book (i.e. AR test, essay, report, etc.). As books are read, the teacher verifies by initialing a designated space on each bookmark. The Gladiators will also provide your students with a letter to take home so that your Parents can become familiar with the Program.

After the program is completed, each school will provide the Gladiators with a number of students who “scored a Reading Hat Trick.” The Gladiators will then provide the appropriate amount of ticket vouchers to the School for distribution to these students. Students will receive a voucher for two (2) complimentary End Zone seats to the Gladiators game vs. Florida on Saturday, November 7th @ 7:05 pm. The voucher will also allow the purchase of up to (4) additional End Zone seats for only $6 each. An End Zone seat has a regular gate price of $13.

The Gladiators will also provide the following to schools participating in the Hat Trick for Reading Program:

• Preparation and distribution of information about the Hat Trick for Reading Program, including support materials, dates of the program and bookmarks to all participating schools
• Random drawing for one of the participating students to drop the Ceremonial Opening Puck.
• Recognition of participating schools on Hat Trick for Reading Night through public address announcements
• Promotion of program via public address announcements, commercials during play-by-play broadcasts, the team’s e-newsletter, Gladiators web site calendar of events, the game program and news releases
• Game tickets are subject to availability.
