New Homeschool Program with focus on History and Language Arts

Year 1 of our program will focus on History and Language Arts with live reenactments, storytelling, and other interactive presentations.  Our goal is to grow into a full homeschool center. with math tutors, science labs, and clubs.

Schedule for Homeschool History at the Atlanta Archives

Starting in September, Home School History will be offered on both the third Wednesday and the preceding Tuesday.  The programs each day will be identical but now you can choose which day is best for your family!  The new and improved schedule is below: 

Schedule of Sessions

August 17

10:00 a.m. US History in a Nutshell: Visualizing and Applying the Timeline (lecture)

This overview of American history will prepare the homeschooler to get the most out of the monthly labs and activities scheduled throughout the year.

1:00 p.m.  Introduction and Tour of the National Archives at Atlanta

Find out about the massive holdings of the National Archives at Atlanta and take a guided tour of our magnificent facility.

September 20 and 21

10:00 a.m. The Surprising Papers in the Case of the Heirs of George Rodgers Clark (Document Lab)

Revolutionary War hero George Rodgers Clark’s victories in the west secured America’s claim to the Mississippi but personal claims were made as well. Documents and maps found in the case date from the 1730s.

1:00 p.m. Documents of the American Revolution (Primary Source Activity)

Students will explore the war through analysis of primary sources from the National Archives.

October 18 and 19

10:00 a.m.  Documents of Early Federal America (Primary Source Activity)

Students will explore the early decades of the United States by analyzing primary sources from the National Archives.

1:00 p.m. How to do a History Project  

Learn how to choose a topic, form a research question, do research, and create a fantastic history project.

November 15 and 16

10:00 a.m.  The Documents of Slavery in the National Archives at Atlanta

(Document Lab)

Students will explore original records dealing with the Atlantic Slave Trade, Runaways, and Slave Manifests.

1:00 p.m.  Civil War Document Lab:

Lab consist of three parts: records relating the Civil War within the holdings of the National Archives at Atlanta, microfilm rolls from other NARA facilities, and the online photographs of George Bernard and the Atlanta Campaign

January 17 and 18

10:00 a.m. Documents of Reconstruction and the Gilded Age (Primary Source Activity)

Students will explore the years after the Civil War and up to the turn of the century through analysis of primary sources from the National Archives.

1:00 p.m.  World War I Lab: A Demographic Study Using the World War I Draft Cards (Document Lab)

The National Archives at Atlanta holds all 24 million draft cards for the entire country.  This lab will look at random samples of this gigantic record group to piece together a view of the American population in 1917-18.

February 14 and 15

10:00 a.m.   Documents of the Long Civil Rights Movement (Document Lab)

Students will explore original records from the National Archives at Atlanta that documents the Civil Rights Movement from after the Civil War to the 1960s

1:00 p.m.  History Project Critique Session  

Students and parents will have an opportunity to ask questions about their research and other aspects of their history projects.

March 20 and 21

10:00 a.m.  Great Depression Lab: The Tennessee Valley Authority and the Controversy of Progress (Document Lab)  

The TVA brought power, flood control, and jobs to the South yet moved many off their land and challenged the idea of limited government in the private sector.

1:00 p.m.  The War and the Home Front: Documents of World War II (Document Lab)

From the depths of the Great Depression, America jump started their economy and joined the allied effort in World War II.

April 17 and 18

10:00 a.m.  Documents of the Manhattan Project (Document Lab)

From the holdings of the National Archives at Atlanta, learn about places like Los Alamos and Oak Ridge, people like Oppenheimer and Groves, and production facilities like Y-12, K-25, and X-10.

1:00 p.m.  NASA Lab: Exploring the Space Program

With the records of the Kennedy Space Center and the Marshall Space Flight Center, explore the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Skylab programs

May 16

10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.  Home School History Expo: Student Projects, Quiz Bowl, and Awards

Home School students are encouraged to present their history research projects in creative formats and participate in a fun but challenging quiz bowl.

History Re-enactment At National Archives

Friday, September 18 12:00 noon at the National Archives at Atlanta

William Temple demonstrates aspects of the life of a Revolutionary War soldier while in period costume at the National Archives at Atlanta. His historical paintings and prints will be displayed in the Visitor Learning Center. Mr. Temple will also have copies of his book, Poetry for the Heart, which will be available for purchase and signing.

William Temple is an artist, musician, poet, and re-enactor. Mr. Temple served during the Vietnam War as a mortar platoon sergeant. He later worked for the United States Secret Service and the Secretary of the Air Force at the Pentagon as an illustrator, graphic designer, and exhibit builder before moving from Washington, D.C. to Brunswick, Georgia to serve as the art director for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Temple retired in 2005 after 32 years of service in the federal government.

In 1997, Temple began his own business in Brunswick, Georgia, Time Past Studio, producing watercolor and oil paintings and limited edition prints of historic subjects. He attends numerous re-enactments, living histories, and art shows, where he dresses in period clothes and plays the parts of the historical characters he represents. He also writes period poetry and music, which he performs at his events.

Gwinnett History Museum American Revolution Class

How has August flown by so quickly? The first Homeschool Day of this school year at the Gwinnett History Museum will be Tuesday, September 1, from 10am to noon. This is a class for children ages 6-10 and the topic is The American Revolution in Georgia. The class will include instruction, role-playing, and hands-on activities and the cost is only $3 per student. Parents are asked to stay with their children unless special arrangements are made, but there is no cost for adults. Pre-registration is strongly recommended, to make sure that we have enough supplies for all students. You can pre-register at www.gwinnettparks.com or by calling 770.822.5178 between the hours of 10am and 4pm, Monday through Thursday. We hope to see you here!

Gwinnett History Museum Classes

Please consider fitting these classes into your schedule so that Gwinnett County will see the value. There is something going on every Tuesday... the one day we are not available this year.

Although we will be cutting back on staff and museum hours, the
homeschool classes at the Gwinnett History Museum/Lawrenceville Female
Seminary will continue for now. Our new schedule, which begins in
September, will have classes for ages 6-10 the first Tuesday of the
month from 10am to noon; classes for ages 11 and up the third Tuesday of
each month, from 10am to noon; and Museum Storytime, a new program for
preschoolers ages 2 to 5, the second Tuesday of each month from 11am to
noon. The cost for the homeschool classes will remain at $3 per
student, and pre-registration is requested; classes may be canceled if
there is not sufficient pre-registration. The cost for Museum Storytime
is our normal $1 museum admission fee, and no pre-registration is
required.

This year we will also repeat our popular Haunted Night at the Museum
program over two nights, October 16-17. This program will include
storytelling, children's activities, and a chance to meet some "ghosts"
from Lawrenceville's past. On Sunday, December 6 we will hold an
etiquette lesson/tea, Tea Manners and Ms. Snowflake. And on November 14
we will partner with McDaniel Farm Park to present a Pioneer Day at the
park. More details on each of these programs will be available in the
new edition of Gwinnett LIFE, which will be available in print and
online in early August.
