Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center adding new Math and Writing Classes

In addition to all the great Science classes offered by GEHC, they are adding more subjects to their roster. 

The Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center¹s Homeschool Programs in
2010-2011 were great! With the addition of new instructors and their
expertise, we are looking forward to an exciting 2011-2012 school year.

The Homeschool Classes and Labs are designed to supplement what you are
teaching at home. Our goal at the GEHC is to assist parents in their efforts
to school their own childrenŠ.not to replace the education they provide.
Students, enrolled in the classes, will be able to use equipment and conduct
experiments that are not easily executed in the home classroom under the
guidance and direction of qualified instructors.

Registration for Fall 2011 began August 1, 2011, and the classes have been
filling. There is still room if you are interested in signing up but do it
this week using the on-line registration at <http://www.gwinnettEHC.org>
website. If a class is full when registering, please contact the GEHC at
770.904.3500 so we can address the situation personally. The deadline for
online registration for Fall Semester 2011 is two business days prior to the
start date of each class offered.

We are really excited about the addition of our Writing and Research
classes, Art classes, and Math classes. Check them out!! If you like the
topic of any class but cannot make the time/day it is planned, give us a
call at 770-904-3517 expressing your interest and a suggestion of another
time/day. If we have enough interested folks, we will set-up a new class
offering.

10:00 a.m. US History in a Nutshell: Visualizing and Applying the Timeline (lecture)

This overview of American history will prepare the homeschooler to get the most out of the monthly labs and activities scheduled throughout the year.

1:00 p.m.  Introduction and Tour of the National Archives at Atlanta

Find out about the massive holdings of the National Archives at Atlanta and take a guided tour of our magnificent facility.

September 20 and 21

10:00 a.m. The Surprising Papers in the Case of the Heirs of George Rodgers Clark (Document Lab)

Revolutionary War hero George Rodgers Clark’s victories in the west secured America’s claim to the Mississippi but personal claims were made as well. Documents and maps found in the case date from the 1730s.

1:00 p.m. Documents of the American Revolution (Primary Source Activity)

Students will explore the war through analysis of primary sources from the National Archives.

October 18 and 19

10:00 a.m.  Documents of Early Federal America (Primary Source Activity)

Students will explore the early decades of the United States by analyzing primary sources from the National Archives.

1:00 p.m. How to do a History Project  

Learn how to choose a topic, form a research question, do research, and create a fantastic history project.

10:00 a.m.  The Documents of Slavery in the National Archives at Atlanta

(Document Lab)

Students will explore original records dealing with the Atlantic Slave Trade, Runaways, and Slave Manifests.

1:00 p.m.  Civil War Document Lab:

Lab consist of three parts: records relating the Civil War within the holdings of the National Archives at Atlanta, microfilm rolls from other NARA facilities, and the online photographs of George Bernard and the Atlanta Campaign

10:00 a.m. Documents of Reconstruction and the Gilded Age (Primary Source Activity)

Students will explore the years after the Civil War and up to the turn of the century through analysis of primary sources from the National Archives.

1:00 p.m.  World War I Lab: A Demographic Study Using the World War I Draft Cards (Document Lab)

The National Archives at Atlanta holds all 24 million draft cards for the entire country.  This lab will look at random samples of this gigantic record group to piece together a view of the American population in 1917-18.

10:00 a.m.   Documents of the Long Civil Rights Movement (Document Lab)

Students will explore original records from the National Archives at Atlanta that documents the Civil Rights Movement from after the Civil War to the 1960s

1:00 p.m.  History Project Critique Session  

Students and parents will have an opportunity to ask questions about their research and other aspects of their history projects.

March 20 and 21

10:00 a.m.  Great Depression Lab: The Tennessee Valley Authority and the Controversy of Progress (Document Lab)  

The TVA brought power, flood control, and jobs to the South yet moved many off their land and challenged the idea of limited government in the private sector.

1:00 p.m.  The War and the Home Front: Documents of World War II (Document Lab)

From the depths of the Great Depression, America jump started their economy and joined the allied effort in World War II.

From the holdings of the National Archives at Atlanta, learn about places like Los Alamos and Oak Ridge, people like Oppenheimer and Groves, and production facilities like Y-12, K-25, and X-10.

With the records of the Kennedy Space Center and the Marshall Space Flight Center, explore the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Skylab programs

Highschool Science Classes in Dacula for 2011-2012 school year

These classes are being offered in a private home.  See the message below:

Carol Hecox will be teaching high school science classes at my Dacula home again during the 2011-12 year. The house is located off of Harbins Road between 316 and Winder Hwy.--598 Tanner Road, Dacula, GA 30019 /Descriptions are available below. Classes will be offered once a week on Tuesdays, and will begin in mid-August. Typical breaks will be taken for holidays. Students are expected to complete reading and written assignments outside of class. Hands on labs are included with each of the classes.

Biology: The cost is $370 for one year instruction. The price includes24 hours of labs. BobJones High School Biology Text. We will cover every chapter except the last one on Human Reproduction. Students will need to
purchase the text book on their own. All other materials and tests will be provided.

Chemistry: _The cost is $370 for one year instruction The price includes labs. Bob Jones High School Chemistry Text (2009 3rd ed.). We generally cover the first 15 chapters and chapter 19. Students will need to purchase the  text book on their own. All other materials and tests will be provided.



Physical Science: The cost is $320 for one year instruction. Labs are done during the class time. I use the Bob Jones High School _Physical World_ Text. (2008 ed.) We will cover every chapter in the text. Students will need to purchase both the text book and the laboratory book on their own. All other materials and tests will be provided.

Anatomy and Physiology: _The cost is $320 for one year instruction. Labs are done during the class time. Apologia's _Human Body: Fearfully and Wonderfully Made _text. We will cover every chapter in the text. Students will need to purchase both the text book and the Anatomy Coloring book by Wynn
Kapit/Lawrence Elson on their own. All other materials and tests will be provided.



These science classes are offered by Carol Hecox. She has a B.A. from Greenville College, Greenville, Illinois and a M.A. from the University of Missouri. She has taught 17 years in public and private schools and
17 years to home school students. These classes will be taught from a creationist viewpoint.

Classical Conversations in Flowery Branch

For the past 2 years, I have been hearing wonderful things about the Classical Conversations Homeschool program.  A friend of mine will be tutoring a 1st year highschool (9th grade) Classical Conversations program next year in flowery branch.  Here is an email she sent about the program.

Dear Friends,

Next year, I will be tutoring a Challenge 1 class at the Flowery Branch Classical Conversations, and I am really excited about it.   If you are not familiar with Challenge or Classical Conversations, I would love to introduce you to the program.  In a nutshell, Classical Conversations is a mission to know God and to make Him known, a model to combine a biblical worldview and classical tools, and a method to equip parents and encourage students.  The Challenge program begins in 7th grade and continues through high school  Reid has been in the program since 7th grade and will do Challenge II next year.  It has been a great fit for our family.  Just the right amount of accountability and positive peer pressure.:) 

Challenge 1 is a first year high school program, and the Flowery Branch location meets on Thursdays from 9-3:30.  The other four days of work are done at home under your supervision.  The seminars are:

Exposition and Composition:  American Literature
Rhetoric:  Drama/Philosophy

Debate:  Free Market Economics/History of American Government

Research:  Physical Science

Logic:  Algebra II or Algebra I

Grammar:  Latin I

Spring Classes at Gwinnett History Museum

The Gwinnett History Museum's spring homeschool classes will start next Tuesday, January 11, with our class for ages 6-10 entitled 19th Century lessons. That class will start by discussing life and events in 1855 (the year our building opened as a school) and then will role-play lessons in a one-room schoolhouse. This month's class for ages 11-up is scheduled for Tuesday, January 25. It is called "What is History?" and will include information on primary documents and historical research, including guidelines for writing a research paper. Classes are scheduled from 10:00am to noon and cost $5 each for Gwinnett County residents; however, students enrolling for four classes at once (January-April) get a discounted rate of $12 for all four, and will be eligible for a discount when registration opens for our May class also. The rest of our spring topics are as follows:

Ages 6-10
2/1 – Who was Abraham Lincoln;
3/1 – Sugar and Spice, But Not Always Nice;
4/12 – Plant It, Watch it Grow.

Ages 11-up
2/15 – The Great Emancipator, Abraham Lincoln;
3/15 – Women's History, Not for Girls Only;
4/26 – Gwinnett Through the Years

Classes include age-appropriate instruction, crafts, and games.

Please note that we have a new policy for ages 6-10; if a parent is unable to remain in class with their child, they will need to review and sign our behavioral contract. Parents are welcome to attend the class for ages 11-up, but are not required to do so.

1960s class at Gwinnett History Museum

1960s class is scheduled January19, 2010 at the Gwinnett History Museum,

Students are asked to please bring a washed, 100% cotton t-shirt for the tie-dye activity. They will have a limited number of bandannas available for those who do not bring a t-shirt.

The Crazy 1960s is for students 11-up, and will cover the Civil Rights movement, space race, and other events of the 1960s as well as some fun, hands-on activities.

This class is an excellent way to introduce your child to the Spanish language!
We will have a great time learning pronunciation, basic vocabulary, introductory phrases, and more! We will incorporate hands on activities into our lessons to keep the class fun and upbeat. Students are encouraged to practice their speaking at home. Students will also learn about the lives and cultures of those in Spanish speaking countries. This is an awesome class for those planning to take Spanish in High School! The earlier one is introduced to a language, the easier time they have with mastering it!

Studio Art $80 (2 spaces left)
Time: 10-10:50 Ages 7-10
Students will need a 9 x 12 heavyweight drawing tablet. All other supplies are included.
In this class, we incorporate both 'project learning' & 'technique' learning. Some weeks We'll have a completed work of art to go
home & others we will have practiced various art techniques. Students will enjoy using a variety of art media such as: graphite, color pencil, oil pastel, chalk, and charcoal.
This is a great class to get the creative juices flowing! Students are not limited by their abilities and all skill levels are praised.

Intro to Writing $80 (5 spaces left)
Time: 11:00-11:50 Ages 9-12/13

Students will need a single subject notebook.
Writing does not have to be scary!
Often, students, and their parents, are so frustrated with their writing attempts that they just give up! I will show the students how to break their writing assignments into manageable steps instead of feeling overwhelmed by the whole project.
We will start with the basics, such as: what makes a good sentence, writing a great paragraph, staying on point, what is the point of writing, finding a writing style, and how to be descriptive. Students will find the tools they need to gain confidence and skill in their writing endeavors. Excellent class for your reluctant writer!

Grammar Basics $80 (5 Spaces left)

Time: 12:00-12:50 Ages 9-12/13 All Supplies Included!
This is an excellent class for your upper elem/lower middle school students who are having a hard time grasping grammar. We will cover the basics of grammar in two parts.
The first session we will review:

Sentence Structure
Subject/Verb Agreement
This is a great class for those just learning their grammar basics or those having trouble 'getting' it. This class is very upbeat and low pressure.

Students will need a 9x12 heavyweight drawing tablet. All other supplies are included
This is an excellent class for those who have had previous art classes or have expressed a great interest in art. This is a technique based class. Students will learn how to create their art through lessons on: Composition, shading, color blending, dimension, and perspective.
The first nine weeks, students will use graphite, charcoal, chalk, and color pencil.

High School Grammar Review $80 (4 spaces left)
2:00-2:50 Ages 14 and Up

All supplies are included.
We'll use a sampling of several worksheets and in class activities to help your child get a better understanding of the English language.
During these nine weeks, we will focus on word usage, punctuation, noun/verb agreement, parts of speech review, prepositional phrases, direct & indirect objects- & how to identify them.
Often, students don't get the grammar foundation they need to excel in this writing and testing endeavors. This class will help fill in the gaps and focus on the basics.

High School Writing $80 (3 spaces left)
3:00-3:50 Ages 14 and Up

Students will need a binder with loose leaf paper.
Students will learn how to write an essay from notes to outline to rough draft to final product! Essay writing is often the nemesis of the high school student. However, there is no need to be so afraid! With basic planning and a great outline, writing an essay is a piece of cake! Students will learn how to research a topic, take excellent notes, and form an outline. They will then learn how to take that information and turn it into a well written paper. We will discuss the various styles of essays, however, this session we will focus more on becoming comfortable with the writing process. Many times the student lacks the confidence to write; I want to help them break down that fear and find their voice. This is an excellent class for all High School students.

Science Alive Open House

Science Alive will be holding an Open House and Registration on January 7 with classes beginning on January 11. Science Alive provides classes for homeschooled students in Life, Earth and Physical Sciences. Emphasis is placed on hands-on demonstrations and student-conducted experiments. Parents can use our classes as supplements to their own teaching or to fully satisfy the core educational requirements in science. We also offer extensions and electives for advanced students.

Archer Community Classes in Downtown Lawrenceville

Archer Community classes are at 2233 New Hope Road in Lawrenceville. This is through the Parks and Recreation system.

There are numerous classes which include:

Guitar
Painting
Sculpture
Creative Writing
Defensive Driving
Driver Education (30 hour for 295)
Microsoft Word, Excell, One Note
Dancing
Writing for Magazines
and Yoga.

These classes last from 4-6 weeks, and run once a week except for the driving classes. They are also very inexpensive.
